Beachem Discusses New Jersey Issues With Transportation Secretary Mineta Annual Construction Forecast Seminar Scheduled For November In Trenton
The New Jersey Alliance for Action made a strong initial contact with Norman Mineta, the new U.S. Secretary of Transportation, on highway, bridge and transit issues vital to New Jersey.
Alliance President Phillip K. Beachem, accompanied by former Congressman Robert Roe, met privately for 90 minutes in Washington, D.C., with Secretary Mineta and his key staff members.
Beachem reported: "We had an excellent opportunity to brief Secretary Mineta on matters important to New Jersey, such as federal transportation funding and renewal of TEA-21, specific road and transit projects and the future of Amtrak. It went very well."
Beachem invited the Secretary to visit New Jersey for a tour of major highway and transit sites. Mineta represented California in the House of Representative and succeeded Roe as Chairman of the House Transportation Committee. He also served on the Clinton Administration as Secretary of Commerce and was nominated by President Bush to head the Department of Transportation.

The Alliance for Action's highly anticipated annual Construction Forecast Seminar will be held Tuesday, November 20, at the War Memorial, in Trenton.
As usual, representatives of some 25 public and private organizations involved in construction will present their construction estimates for the two-year period of 2002-2003. Their figures provide a barometer on what is ahead for New Jersey's economy, particularly for those businesses and labor organizations affected by the state's vital construction industry.
Alliance President Phillip K. Beachem said everyone is eagerly awaiting this year's construction estimates to analyze what impact the current economic slowdown has had. This is especially so, Beachem said, since the all-time record high projections made last year.
That seminar made headlines when the two-year estimates of public and private construction totaled $20.4 billion - the highest numbers recorded in the 16 years the Alliance has sponsored the seminars.
Another Successful Golf Outing
A sell-out turnout of 144 golfers enjoyed the Alliance for Action's 25th Annual Golf Outing on June 4 at Deal Country Club. Individual winners were Jack Kocsis, Executive Director of the New Jersey Building Contractors Association for the longest drive, and Henry DeAngelis, a guest of Alliance Chairman George Laufenberg, for closest to the pin. John Hibbs again was chairman for the outing.
