kicked off with a visit with New Jersey
Institute of Technology President Robert Altenkirch to hear a presentation
about the International Intermodal Corridor.
Congressman Oberstar was also taken to a meeting with Bayonne Mayor Joseph
Doria for a tour of the Peninsula at Bayonne (the former Military Ocean
Terminal) and to Elizabeth for a review of the Kapkowski Road Project and
the Jersey Gardens Mall.
TEA-21 expires this year and New Jersey faces stiff competition from
southern and western states for a fair share of federal transportation
dollars in the renewal legislation.
Congressman Oberstar was accompanied on the tours by Alliance for Action
President Phil Beachem and former New Jersey Congressman Bob Roe, who
served as Chairman of the House Transportation Committee.
Several key members of the business, labor and government communities
attended the special luncheon, including New Jersey Congressmen Bill
Pascrell and Steven Rothman, and John Hibbs, the President and Business
Manager of Heavy and General Construction Laborers Local Union 472.
