MARKETING REPORT UNDER WAY FOR TENANTS AT PORTS NEWARK/ELIZABETH
Public Service Electric & Gas has joined forces with state agencies and private developers to market new distribution centers under way at Ports Newark/Elizabeth. The effort seeks tenants for sites in various stages of development at 17 brownfield and underutilized locations near the Port’s marine terminal complex.
Tim Comerford, Manager of Area Development for PSE&G, which is heading the campaign, said there are now more than 10 million square feet of space that could be developed within a 20-mile radius of the ports. The sites were identified as part of the Portfields program launched three years ago by the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (EDA) and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
COMMISSIONER LEVIN WILL SPEAK AT ALLIANCE SOUTH JERSEY DINNER
Susan Bass Levin, Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs will be the guest speaker at the South Jersey Regional Dinner of the New Jersey Alliance for Action on Wednesday, April 18.
The dinner will be held at Tavistock Country Club in Tavistock at 7 p.m. following a reception at 5:30 p.m.
Before entering state government, Commissioner Levin served for 14 years as Mayor of Cherry Hill.
The dinner also will feature awards to two prominent South Jersey leaders. Joseph Balzano, Executive Director and CEO of the South Jersey Port Corporation, will receive the Walter Rand Award for public service. George Hand, President of Oldcastle’s Eastern Pipe Group, will be inducted into the Alliance for Action Hall of Fame.
DOT PLANS TO EASE TRAVEL IN THE SHORE AREA
The State Department of Transportation’s newly announced $3.3 billion capital program for Fiscal 2008 will pay special attention to easing travel for shore area drivers and transit passengers. The plan includes:
-Getting rid of bad pavement on Interstate 195.
-Providing seats instead of standing on new buses and rebuilt rail cars for daily commuters on NJ Transit.
-Alleviating confusion at the intersection of Routes 35 and 36 at Monmouth Mall in Eatontown.
-Making moderate improvements to address big problems on Routes 9 and 70 by adding lanes and fixing intersections in Ocean County.
The proposed plan also allocates money toward pedestrian safety and continuing the “fix it first” approach to set repair priorities for existing roads and bridges.
HARBOR DEEPENING ASSESSMENT READY FOR PUBLIC REVIEW
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, has announced that a copy of the Draft Environmental Assessment of the Effects of NY/NJ Harbor Deepening Project on the Remedial Investigation/Feasibility Study of the Newark Bay Study Area is available for public review through May 7, 2007.

IZZO TESTIFIES IN WASHINGTON ON THREATS OF GLOBAL CLIMATE CHANGE
Ralph Izzo, Chairman and CEO of Public Service Electric & Gas Company, presented strong testimony to the U.S. House Subcommittee on Energy and Air Quality. Izzo told the subcommittee members that global climate change represents a real environmental threat as well as a significant business challenge.
Izzo informed the group that PSE&G for more than a decade has been at the forefront of a group of business leaders seeking national policy with mandatory action to address the issue.
VERIZON WIRELESS PLACES $6 BILLION CONTRACT WITH ALCATEL-LUCENT
A $6 billion order has been placed by Verizon Wireless with Alcatel-Lucent for a three-year supply of network gear, software and other services. The equipment will enable Verizon Wireless, headquartered in Basking Ridge, to expand its broadband data network and introduce new services.
Alcatel-Lucent of Paris is a $25 billion company with its United States headquarters in Murray Hill. It was created when the two companies merged last November.
US NAVY GIVES $260 MILLION ORDER TO LOCKHEED MARTIN OF MOORESTOWN
New Jersey received an economic boost when Lockheed Martin, the Moorestown defense contractor, was awarded a $260 million contract by the U.S. Navy. The order to Lockheed Martin’s naval and surveillance systems division is to install the next generation of Aegis Weapon Systems on vessels of allied nations.
The systems will be installed on three Australian air warfare destroyers and on a Spanish frigate. Aegis is a sea-based missile defense system that includes computer-controlled radar.
PARSIPPANY-TROY HILL MAYOR TO DISCUSS FUTURE PLANS
Transportation funding, pharmaceutical and pride in New Jersey will be the main topics at a meeting of the Morris County Alliance for Action on Friday, April 27.
The meeting at the Birchwood Manor in Whippany is expected to attract some 100 business, labor and government leaders. Registration is at 8:15 a.m., followed by the program which begins at 9 a.m.
The speakers will include:
-Dr. Mark Stout, Assistant Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation, on the DOT’s Fiscal 2008 program.
-Henry W. Kurz, Account Executive of the New Jersey Commerce and Economic Growth Commission, on Pharmaceuticals and the Life Sciences.
-Mayor Michael M. Luther of Parsippany-Troy Hills on “No. 1 in New Jersey and proud to be.”

-Virginia Bauer, who has headed the New Jersey Commerce, Economic Growth and Tourism Commission for three years, will be leaving that position for her nomination by Governor Corzine to the Board of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
-Patrick O’Keefe has announced that he plans to retire by the end of the year from the position he has held for 22 years as chief executive officer of the New Jersey Builders Association.
-Ulises Diaz is leaving United Water to become the Vice President of Legislative Affairs for Verizon.
-Anthony Coley has been officially appointed by Governor Corzine as Director of Communications.
