PLANS ANNOUNCED FOR FOOD STORE AND HEALTH FACILITY IN DOWNTOWN NEW BRUNSWICK
Plans to bring a supermarket and fitness center to New Brunswick's downtown were announced by Mayor Jim Cahill. The 12-story, 625,000-square-foot, $114 million project would be on a 1.6 acre site next to the Ferren Mall on French Street.
The project also would include a 1,200-space parking garage and 80 loft-style residential units. It would be a partnership between the City, the New Brunswick Development Corporation (DevCo), the New Brunswick Parking Authority and Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.
The Wellness Plaza plan calls for a 45,000-square-foot grocery store, occupying most of the first floor. The first-floor would also include an aquatic center with a competition-sized swimming pool and two smaller therapeutic pools for exercise classes.
The Parking Authority would own all of the structure, except for the housing component, which would be owned by DevCo. The Parking Authority would issue general obligation bonds for much of its portion. The site is between New Brunswick's transit village zone and would provide walkway access to the nearby train station.
