Christie Nominates New Transportation Commissioner And
NJ Transit Executive Director
Governor-Elect Chris Christie today announced his nominations for two of New Jersey’s key transportation leadership positions.
James Weinstein, former State Commissioner of Transportation, was nominated to be Executive Director of New Jersey Transit, succeeding Richard Sarles. James Simpson was nominated by Christie as Commissioner of the State Department of Transportation, replacing Stephen Dilts.
Weinstein, who served as transportation commissioner from 1998 to 2002, is currently Senior Vice President of AECOM. A former newspaper reporter, Weinstein also served as Chief of Staff at the DOT during the administration of former Governor Thomas Kean and headed Kean’s Authorities Unit.
Simpson, who served as Federal Transit Administrator after his appointment in August 2006, began his career in transportation over thirty years ago as a tractor trailer driver for a local moving company while attending college. In 1995, then-New York Governor Pataki appointed Simpson as a Commissioner of the New York State Metropolitan Transportation Authority where he served for ten years.
New Jersey Alliance for Action President Philip K. Beachem commended Governor-Elect Christie for “making two excellent appointments of individuals with outstanding credentials and experience in transportation.” Beachem noted that Weinstein is a former member of the Alliance for Action Board of Directors and that Simpson was a featured speaker at the State Transportation Conference sponsored by the Alliance in 2008.
