NEW JERSEY PRESENTS WATERFRONT DEVELOPMENT PLAN
A new element has been injected into the running controversy between New Jersey and Pennsylvania over dredging the Delaware River’s shipping channel. New Jersey officials have presented a $5 billion waterfront development plan as an alternative to deepening the channel from 40 to 45 feet- a project strongly supported by Pennsylvania Governor Rendell.
The New Jersey plan would seek to develop 50 miles of New Jersey waterfront from Pennsauken in Camden County through Gloucester and Salem Counties. It would include $3.6 billion in residential development, nearly $650 million in marine terminal development and $365 million to bolster industrial and warehouse parks, all financed with private and public money. A Rendell spokeswoman labeled the New Jersey proposal as “a feeble attempt to deflect attention from the real issue of dredging.”
SUPREME COURT APPROVES SPECIAL MASTER FOR NEW JERSEY-DELAWARE DISPUTE
The U.S. Supreme Court has granted a request by Delaware to appoint a special master in a border dispute with New Jersey. The dispute involves New Jersey’s effort to help energy giant BP to build a liquefied natural gas plant on the New Jersey side of the Delaware River. Delaware environmental officials last year rejected the application of BP subsidiary Crown Landing LLC to build a 2,000 foot pier to serve as a LNG facility for Logan Township in New Jersey.
