TOWN MEETINGS SET ON GOVERNOR’S FISCAL RESTRUCTURING PLAN
A schedule of town meetings has been announced on Governor Jon Corzine’s financial restructuring plan he will outline in his State-of-the-State Message on Tuesday, January 8. The announced meetings are as follows:
-Saturday, January 12, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Livingston High School, 30 Harp Drive, Livingston.
-Monday, January 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Bergen County Academies, 200 Hackensack Avenue, Hackensack.
-Wednesday, January 16, 7 to 9 p.m., at the County College of Morris, 214 Center Grove Road, Randolph.
>-Saturday, January 19, 2 to 4 p.m., at Middle Township High School, 300 East Atlantic Avenue, Cape May County Court House.

ALLIANCE EXPRESSES REGRET AT DEATH OF GEORGE WARRINGTON
On behalf of the Alliance for Action, President Philip K. Beachem expressed sorrow at the recent death of George Warrington, former Executive Director of NJ Transit.
Beachem recalled that the Alliance had worked closely with Warrington throughout his entire career that began when Warrington joined the New Jersey Department of Transportation when Louis Gambaccini was the Commissioner at the time. That relationship, Beachem, said continued as Warrington advanced his career in transportation as President of Amtrak and most recently as Executive Director of NJ Transit.
“George had that unique combination of professional skills and knowledge of how government works to advance many projects that served the residents of our state,” Beachem said.

ROUTE 23 DESIGNATED AS ROBERT A. ROE HIGHWAY
The State Senate overwhelmingly approved an Assembly bill to designate the entire length of New Jersey State Route 23 as the Robert A. Roe Highway. The action honors former Congressman Roe as a “transportation expert who has played a leading role in promoting the growth and development of New Jersey’s bridges and infrastructure.”
The bill recognizes Roe’s 29 years in Congress including his service as Chairman of the House Public Works and Transportation Committee and his authorship of the Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act (ISTEA) of 1991. The bill was sponsored by Assemblymen Thomas P. Giblin, John S. Wisniewski, Robert M. Gordon and Alex DeCroce.
SCHOOL CONSTRUCTION APPROVALS CONTINUE
In the final 2007 local school construction referendum results on December 11, voters approved projects in eight of fourteen districts. This represented a total of $158.4 million out of a proposed $347.7 million.
This was the fifth and final special election for 2007. In summary for the year, voters approved 31 out of 49 proposed school construction projects (63.3%). The next special school construction referendums will be on January 22, 2008.
NEW BRUNSWICK GATEWAY PROJECT RECEIVES HISTORIC SITE APPROVAL
New Brunswick’s $130 million multi-use Gateway project cleared a major administrative hurdle when it received unanimous approval from New Jersey’s Historic Sites Council. The Council’s approval is expected to be ratified by the Sate Department of Environmental Protection and heads for a January hearing before the City Planning Board.
Gateway’s transit village component would include a roughly 200-unit condominium tower, an eight-story parking garage, Rutgers bookstore, Rutgers University Press, retail shops and public space. The construction site is near the corner of Easton Avenue and Somerset Street.
US EPA SEEKS ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY AWARD NOMINATIONS
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is accepting nominations for its annual Environmental Quality Awards to individuals and organizations for significant contributions to improving the environment during 2007. Nominations must be submitted by February 22, 2008, and must be in New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands.
The awards recognize achievements in these categories: Individual citizen, press/media, business/industry, non-profits and environmental community groups, federal, state, local or tribal government agency, and environmental education.

GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES MOVES TO STRENGTHEN SMALL BUSINESS SERVICES
Governor Jon Corzine authorized transfer of the Division of Small, Women and Minority Business Development from the Office of Economic Growth to the Treasury Department. At the same time, he announced the appointment of Nina Moseley as Senior Director of the Division.
Corzine said: “Small businesses are the heart of New Jersey’s economy and these moves will provide a prime opportunity for the state to refocus its efforts to diversify its pool of supplier businesses.”
Moseley most recently served as Senior Director of Business Services with the New Jersey Commerce Commission.
