PARKWAY AND TURNPIKE WIDENING CONTRACTS ARE AWARDED
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority approved contracts for widening of the Garden State Parkway and a project on the New Jersey Turnpike. Work is expected to begin no later than next month.
Richard E. Pierson Construction of Pilesgrove was selected from eight bidders for a contract of $31.31 million to widen a 12-mile section of the Parkway from mileposts 70 to 75 in Lacey and Berkeley in Ocean County. The project is scheduled for completion in June 2011.
Earle Asphalt Co. of Farmingdale also was awarded a $41.9 million contract to widen the Parkway from mileposts 63 in Stafford to 70 in Barnegat and to build express E-Z Pass toll lanes.
The first major contract in the Turnpike widening went to A. Servidone, Inc., and B. Anthony Construction Corp., a joint venture, to build infrastructure for relocating the Exit 8 toll plaza in East Windsor.
BOUND BROOK GETS $13 MILLION IN STIMULUS FUNDS FOR FLOOD CONTROL
Bound Brook welcomed the release of $13 million in federal stimulus funding toward construction of the final link of the long-awaited Green Brook Flood Control Project. The project will soon go out to bid, and work is expected to begin within months.
The final leg of the project is a levee and flood wall system to run along the Raritan River from the Middle Brook to South Main Street. It will include two flood closure gates and a 90,000-gallon-per-minute pump station. The flood control plan is the biggest US Army Corps of Engineers project east of the Mississippi River.
NEW AIR SERVICE BEGINS AT ATLANTIC CITY INTERNATIONAL
Service between Atlantic City International Airport and Boston by Spirit Airlines began on May 1. Spirit will fly two daily non-stop flights, with one departing from Boston at 10:40 a.m. and the other leaving from Atlantic City at 5:20 p.m.
This is the second time in recent weeks that Atlantic City International Airport has announced new air service. The first being the announcement that Air Trans Airways will offer service between Atlantic City and Atlanta and Orlando beginning in June.
IMPROVEMENTS PLANNED FOR CORRIDORS INTO ATLANTIC CITY
The Casino Reinvestment Development Authority Board approved a fund reservation of $20 million for the South Inlet Transportation Improvement Project and granted a Preliminary Determination of Project Eligibility to the Albany Avenue Corridor Improvement Project.
The South Inlet Project, a $91.7 million initiative, will create a landscaped boulevard starting at Route 30 and Delaware Avenue, extending along the length of Connecticut Avenue and improving intersections along the way. The project will create a new entrance way for existing casino properties, the developing Revel project and existing housing largely developed by the CRDA in the Northeast Inlet.
Addressing another important corridor to Atlantic City, CRDA approved a Preliminary Determination of Project Eligibility to the Albany Avenue Corridor Improvement Project. The US 40/322 Corridor currently experiences significant traffic congestion at the West End Avenue and Winchester Avenue intersections during peak hours. A feasibility study and preliminary engineering analysis will evaluate options that could improve traffic, promote future development and protect neighborhoods.
PARKING SPACES TO BE DOUBLED AT EDISON STATION
A federal stimulus-funded contract to more than double parking at the Edison Station on the Northeast Corridor rail line was approved by NJ Transit. The $4.7 million contract would add nearly 500 new parking spaces, which NJ Transit said would be more than enough for everyone now on the waiting list to get a space.
The project, expected to begin in June, would create 110 jobs during construction.
DEP MOVING AHEAD ON LICENSED SITE PROFESSIONAL PROGRAM
A program to reduce the time the State Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) takes to evaluate and approve cleanups of polluted sites will start this summer, according to Acting DEP Commissioner Mark Muriello.
The Licensed Site Professional program will allow the DEP to establish a board to license professionals to handle review and approval of plans for certain contaminated sites. The Alliance for Action strongly supports the initiative.
In another development, the DEP is upgrading its computer network to allow applicants to file over the Internet..
