ALLIANCE ALERT GENERATES PROTESTS ON DEP RULES CHANGES
The New Jersey Alliance for Action alert about proposed regulatory changes by the State Department of Environmental Protection has generated hundreds of letters, emails, and phone calls to Acting Governor Codey and the DEP to protest. It also stimulated a lively turnout at a public hearing.
The Alliance “Action Alert” warned that proposed DEP amendments would negatively affect both commercial and residential construction projects by precluding most connections to sewer systems. Alliance President Phil Beachem and Executive Vice President Jerry Keenan are set to meet with DEP Commissioner Brad Campbell next week to discuss the Alliance’s concerns.
DRBC TO HOLD HEARING ON WATER CERTIFICATES OF ENTITLEMENT
The Delaware River Basin Commission will hold a public hearing on Wednesday, December 7, at 2:30 p.m. on a proposed change to its rules on certificates of entitlement. The certificates establish the amount of water users can legally take from the surface waters of the Basin. The Commission says the change would help to avoid controversy and lawsuits through revision of the language to remove any ambiguity. To testify you must register in advance with the Commission secretary, Pam Bush, at (609) 883-9500. Written comments will be accepted through Tuesday, January 10, 2006.
SOMERVILLE MOVING AHEAD ON THREE REDEVELOPMENT PROJECTS
After clearing legal obstacles, Somerville expects demolition to begin early next year for redevelopment of the downtown former Landmark Shopping Center. On another redevelopment project, Somerville expects to request development proposals on the old landfill by Christmas 2006 to produce a new neighborhood. On still another front, discussions will continue in Somerville with residents and business owners in the East End for a longer-range revitalization of that gateway to the business district.
PEOPLE ON THE MOVE
George R. Laufenberg, Alliance for Action Chairman, has been elected to the Independent College Fund of New Jersey Board of Trustees.
Arthur Guida, Director of External Affairs for Public Service Electric & Gas, is serving as Chairman of the Greater Newark Holiday Fund. The Fund raises money to aid 12 social service agencies that provide assistance to the needy.
ALLIANCE IN ACTION
The New Jersey Alliance for Action was honored by the American Public Works Association New Jersey Chapter with its Corporate Member Award for long-term support to the public works industry.
Alliance President Philip Beachem participated in a panel discussion on transportation funding options at the NJ League of Municipalities Conference in Atlantic City.
