CAPACITY CROWD EXPECTED FOR EAGLE AWARDS DINNER
Another capacity audience is expected at the Alliance for Action’s Annual Dinner to honor the Class of 2007 Eagle Award recipients.

The dinner at the Hyatt Regency New Brunswick on Wednesday, October 17, has been described by the business publication, NJ BIZ, as “one of New Jersey’s top networking events.” Nearly 1,000 attendees will represent the leadership of New Jersey business, labor and government.

The Eagle Award recipients will be:
-William Stavola, President of Trap Rock Industries, will receive the Ellis S. Vieser Lifetime Achievement Award.
- New Jersey Natural Gas will be presented with the Richard M. Hale Chairman’s Award.
-Tom Manning, President of the New Jersey State Association of Pipe Trades and Business Manager of Steamfitters, Pipefitters and Apprentices Local 475, will receive the Sigurd Lucassen Labor Award.
-Robert Binder, Chairman of Binder Machinery Company, will receive the President’s Award.
- Richard Raczynski, Chief Engineer for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, will receive the Dr. John L. Buzzi Engineering Excellence Award.

EDUCATION LAW CENTER ASKS SUPREME COURT TO MANDATE SCHOOL FUNDING DEADLINE OF DECEMBER 31
The Education Law Center has filed legal action asking the New Jersey Supreme Court to set December 31, 2007, as the deadline for the Legislature to provide funding needed to restart stalled school construction projects in the urban Abbott Districts.

David Sciarra, Executive Director of the Center, said the Legislature has not acted despite the indication by the Supreme Court that it expected new school construction funds to be provided by June 30. He declared: “We filed with the Court as a last resort, out of frustration with the continuing lack of action in Trenton.”

DOWNTOWN NEWARK BUILDING IMPROVEMENT PROJECT STARTS
In Newark’s Central Business District, a $4 million capital improvement project has begun at Two Gateway Center, an 18-story, 832,000 square-foot office building.

The renovation program includes a cooling tower upgrade, a computer-controlled building management system, lighting upgrades and modernization of elevators. Two Gateway is owned by C&K Properties of New York City.

FIRST PHASE BEGINS FOR PICATINNY ARSENAL RESEARCH CAMPUS
Ground was broken by Advance Realty Group on the first phase of a 1.1 million square-foot research campus at Picatinny Arsenal in Morris County. The initial development of the Picatinny Applied Research Campus involves construction of 100,000 square feet of office and laboratory space within the base’s high-security enclosure.

Future phases will provide more than 1-million square feet to be constructed on an additional 120 acres outside the enclosure.

OCEAN PROTECTION COUNCIL PROPOSED IN SENATE BILL
A bill to create a New Jersey Coastal and Ocean Protection Council has been released by the State Senate Environment Committee. It is sponsored by Senator Ellen Karcher, D-Monmouth.

As proposed, the Council would be advisory to the State Department of Environmental Protection. It would have nine members, with six from the public and three from state government.

SOMERVILLE MOVES AHEAD ON LANDFILL REDEVELOPMENT
Plans to redevelop a 160-acre landfill have been approved by the Somerville Council. Bids from developers were requested, with the date to select a redeveloper by the middle of 2008.

Plans call for a mixed-use project with up to 1,200 multi-family residences, a building for offices or research and development facilities, a 50-room hotel, a cinema, retail and civic space and parking.

FIRM RECEIVES $1 MILLION FROM NJEDA FOR NEW CAMDEN OFFICES
The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) has awarded $1 million through the Edison Innovation Fund to Agilence, Inc., for new offices in Camden’s Waterfront Technology Center. Agilence will use the funds to hire 27 employees and to develop products in the Center, which is owned by NJEDA.

Agilence sells technology to retailers to monitor store registers for employee mistakes and fraud. It also sells systems to transportation organizations for toll lane monitoring and to gaming companies for tracking players.

MERCER ALLIANCE TO MEET FOR A VARIED AGENDA
The Mercer County Alliance for Action will meet on Friday, October 26, to hear updates on widening of the New Jersey Turnpike, Princeton University’s master plan and Trenton’s future. The program will begin at 9 a.m., following registration at 8:15 a.m.

Speakers will include Trenton Mayor Douglas H. Palmer, Richard Raczynski, P.E., Chief Engineer of the Turnpike Authority, and Michael McKay, Vice President-Facilities, Princeton University. The meeting site will be the Lafayette Yard Marriott Conference Center, Trenton. To register Go Here.

PEOPLE ON THE MOVE
- Lawrence DeMarzo has been appointed by State Attorney General Anne Milgram as Acting Director of the State Division of Consumer Affairs. He had been the Division’s Director of Consumer Relations.
