The New Jersey Alliance for Action has presented the candidates for Governor with a report on issues of critical importance to the state’s future. It is entitled: “Leading New Jersey Out of Recession.”

Alliance President Philip K. Beachem recalled that when the Alliance came together in 1974 as a uniquely diverse coalition, New Jersey was suffering from a severe recession and unemployment in the construction trades was in double digits. Its focus on public and private capital investment spurred action in Trenton that helped lead the state to economic recovery. History has a way of repeating itself and the solutions of the 1970’s are just as viable today.

The issues and recommendations this year were developed by the Alliance’s highly diversified membership under the chairmanship of Dr. Robert Altenkirch, President of New Jersey Institute of Technology and an Alliance Board member. The consensus again was that investment in New Jersey’s aging infrastructure systems would be the quickest, most effective way to stimulate the economy and create jobs, particularly in the depressed construction industry.

The areas addressed in the report are state capital funding, transportation, energy and utilities, regulatory reform, education, maritime and water resources and special issues of statewide impact.

Beachem said there is an urgent need in the current political campaign for candidates and the public to focus attention on New Jersey’s infrastructure needs in making choices for the November 3 general election.
